In the region of Maremma (between Chianti and the Mediterranean), Sangiovese is often called "Morellino"
but it is a derivative of Sangiovese. This area, which was still 15 years ago a grazing land, is now planted with many vines to satisfy the immense demand for Italian wines. The region is quite hilly and the roads there are terrible and the soil is very poor. MORELLINO is now quite famous among Italian wine connoisseurs. The Riserva from Le Lupinaie spends a full year in French oak casks...

Dark brick/tile color. Great nose of cedar, ripe plums and vanillin. Medium-bodied, soft with elegant tones and ripe plum flavors. Quite complex, not overly tannic and with a great finish of vanillin. Ideal for meat dishes, roasts and Gorgonzola cheese. Best if drunk within next two years as Sangiovese from this area should not be kept more than 6 years. At its best now.
