- Chianti is the most famous wine name in Italy is not the name of a grape but actually a region. Chianti lies in the 35 miles of hills between Florence and Siena, a complex geological region as well as geographically. The region comprises 9 different communes not dissimilar to Bordeaux wherein each commune has a particular characteristic that shows in the wine. The wine...

A dark garnet colored wine whose aromas evoke red berries, cassis, cedar, spice and smoke. A big, full-bodied Chianti with a very ripe fruity attack of plums and prunes and a medium finish with a touch of wood and leather notes. This wine possesses great mouthfeel and has a good balance between structure, acidity, and tannin. It will be at its peak in 2007, but will evolve for another 3-4 years. Ideal with charcuterie, pasta or light meat courses.

At the same time, he decided to abandon the traditional method of managing farm produce, whereby wine, oil and cereals were sold as "raw materials" to those who processed and sold them. The idea, which was the driving force behind the estate's modernization, was to cater direct to consumers, by providing them with oil, wine and country life. Duccio's encounter with winemaker Carlo Ferrini wrote the first chapter of this story with the beginning of wine growing and production; it has since become...

One of Decanter's top picks for 97 Chianti Riserva, Carlo Ferrini (master winemaker also does Fonterutoli, Brolio, Poliziano etc.) created a super wine from this up and coming estate just outside of Florence. The Corsini family has transformed this old estate into a top notch facility and the results are stunning. Juicy, ripe Sangiovese, with a touch of sweet oak from the new barrique, a wine you can drink now or age for another 5-10 years.

Canaiolo Also called Canaiolo Nero, this black grape is cultivated in Italy, but not as widely as in years past. After the 19th century's phylloxera epidemic, Canaiolo vines proved difficult to graft onto healthy rootstock, so it was grown much less. Today there are still pockets of Canaiolo vineyards throughout Tuscany, and it is an allowed ingredient in Chianti - in fact, in the 18th century it was even...
