The St. Matthew Passion was first performed on Good Friday ( Karfreitag ) 1729 at Leipzig, Thomaskirche. In his two great Passions, the St. John (1724) and the St. Matthew (1727) Bach's luxuriance of melody the intensity of his harmony and the way in which he could force the most complex polyphony into the service of the profoundest emotional expression must have created a lasting impression on that first congregation in Leipzig.

Description: A stunning performance of one Bach's most celebrated sacred compositions After Bach's death his music was neglected by the public for over 80 years, although a few musicians admired it, among them Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven. A revival of interest in Bach's music occurred in the mid-19th century when the German composer Felix Mendelssohn arranged a performance of the St. Matthew's Passion in 1829, creating great popular interest in Bach's music that has persisted...

We are however convinced that the music (and performance!) in itself is so great, and the various stories told so grippingly, that even an 'abbreviated' Passion will be appreciated by many - especially since this Hybrid SACD contains a Surround Sound version which to great dramatic effect brings out the various features of a live performance of the work: two choirs and orchestras placed antiphonally, a children's choir in the organ loft et cetera. Made in 1999, the original recording was actually...
