On average, it takes one of these women three hours to embroider each bird. By becoming income owners in their households, the Mayan women gain their self-esteem, their independence and an ability to put their children into high school, which is not free in Belize. Currently, this effort provides cottage industry jobs to approximately 50 embroiderers and 35 basket weavers. Projects have also been initiated to help men in these communities.
