This wine is a fine, deep, dark-red color in the glass. On the nose it is spicy, with soft, ripe fruit aromas. On the palate there are is round tannins, complexity and power. A rich, full-bodied, smooth wine, with touches of ripe plums, stone fruit and soft fruit. This is a rich wine, with all in harmony and balance.

Region : France Though French wines are the highest valued wines in the world, esteemed wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne were only enjoyed locally until 150 years ago when transportation improvements made them widely available. French wine production is governed by a strict quality-control system, which regulates the grapes used in each region and classifies wineries according to an elaborate cru hierarchy. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc are just...

The Rhone Valleys most successful producer continues to ratchet up the level of quality of his Cotes du Rhone cuvees, of which he produces hundreds of thousands of cases. Both Marcel Guigal and his son Philippe realize how important quality is and demonstrate that commitment in these lower level wines. They just get better and better. Guigals red Cotes du Rhones have become a staple of much everyday drinking, and I have enjoyed them when flying business class on United Airlines as well.

"The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape offers expressive notes of kirsch liqueur, licorice, herbs, meats, and spice. This fleshy effort should drink nicely for 7-10 years."

Guigal is best known for its legendary Cote-Rotie and Hermitage, but the 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape fully deserves a place alongside its more renowned siblings, with elegant refinement and subtle, soil-driven intensity. Its dark, pungent flavors of black cherry and spiced plum are richly prominent, constantly referring back to a deeply gripping minerality that tethers the complex aromas of fruit, spice, fresh meat and black tea. It feels like a sphere, seamless and harmonious, staining the palate...

Distinctive Châteauneuf, with plenty of wild mushrooms, wet earth, game and leather. You are bidding on Wine Spectator's number one wine for 2002. This was purchased new and has been stored in my 55 degree cellar ever since. Below is Wine Spectator's description of there best wine of 2002! This is not a fruit bomb; it has chewy tannins. But underneath is wonderful sweet fruit, as well as a subtle mineral caress. Something special. Best from 2005 through 2015. 13,330 cases made. PM

This is textbook Chateuneuf - all the elements are there: dark fruit, hot stone, with a bit of white pepper on the finish. However, it cannot be aged for 10-15 years, as this site suggests. It does not have the backbone for that. As the owner of a case, I would not recommend laying it down for more than 9 or 10. Nevertheless, you simply cannot go wrong with this selection. Every lover of CNdP should have at least a couple of bottles in their cellar.

Description: "Even better than the 1999.... It reveals a deeper ruby/purple color along with sumptuous scents of creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Boasting abundant glycerin, fuller body, additional black fruit characteristics, low acidity, ripe tannin, and a longer finish, it should be silky and accessible upon release." RP

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape...
