The Best of Groove Collective
Description The Best of Groove Collective is a bit of a misnomer, as it only collects tracks off of the group's three Shanachie releases. As such, seminal hip-hop jazz tracks such as "Rentstrike" and "Rhasaansong" -- both off Groove Collective's Reprise debut -- are absent here. Nonetheless, the innovative ensemble continued to make highly danceable and funky music through the late '90s and early 2000s, and this compilation offers a nice single-disc overview. When I was a kid I used to pop in to NYC, hit 8th Street and thing everything I saw or picked up was the coolest in the world. One of the things I picked up was a flyer for Groove Collective presented by Giant Ste p (I think they had to be the first band on Giant Step or something). Several trips to the store in the pre-internet days and I had in my hands a CD of some of the sickest acid jazz (ok the only) I ever heard. 10+ years and several albums later, I am still rocking this eclectic ensemble...

The Promo Prints in the Vault's collection hail from the '60s through the '90s and are truly exceptional portraits of contemporary...

Description It took Cheb Mami's collaboration with Sting on the latter's mega-hit "Desert Rose" to bring Arabic music into the collective consciousness of the Western world. Never ones to pass up a trend, the folks at Putumayo have scoured North Africa and the Middle East in search of more Arabic pop music. What they turned up is a collection of dance tracks that show the heavy influence of hip-hop, urban pop, funk, and other Western styles, while maintaining the cultural integrity of the region...
