Aromas of ripe apples and a typical Veltliner spiciness marry to create a fascinating fruit bouquet. On the palate, the wine is soft and juicy, supported by a fine fruit acidity. Very harmonious, allowing for perfectly smooth drinking.

The pride of Austria has gotten a lot of press over the last few years, largely the result of a word-of-mouth campaign by the world’s most influential sommeliers. This is the stuff they drink themselves, and Leth (the 'h' is silent) is a textbook version. Wine Spectator called it, 'Ripe, rich and lush, with ripe peach and buttery apple flavors, followed by a long, spicy and cream-filled finish. Impressive…' There isn’t much to go around, but we’ll happily down whatever is left.

Tasted in January, it displays the lush richness (backed by unabashedly but unobtrusive high alcohol) that is among the hallmarks of Melusine Gruner Veltliner. Pineapple, rhubarb and citrus aromas are tinged...

"The Austrian national grape variety is marked by its primary rock character, a light green tinge, yellow apple scents, and spicy hay flavours supported by minerals. Grüner Veltliner is particularly good when served with cold starters, pastas, delicate salads or as an aperitif."

Wachau produces the most powerful and rich examples, while the more restrained and elegant styles come from the Kremstal and Kamptal, as the soil is more sandy loam. Additionally, the terms Federspiel (meaning “falconry”) and Smaragd (meaning “emerald”) are found on the labels of Grüner Veltliners from the Wachau region only. Federspiel wines are made from grapes harvested at a minimum of 20 degrees Brix (a measurement of ripeness) and are medium bodied, with between 11.5 percent and 12.5 percent...
