In the 1870’s, Congress ordered the war Department to gather all of the maps, prints and diagrams from the Civil War and prepare them for reprinting to create an official record of the war. More than 20 years later, famed New York lithographer Julius Bien was finally able to create this print, in 1895, as part of U.S. Government’s "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies."

About the Artist: Alexander "Sandy" Calder was born into a family of renowned artists who encouraged him to create from a very young age. As a boy, he had his own workshop where he made toys for himself and his sister. He received a degree in mechanical engineering in 1919 but soon after decided to pursue a career as an artist.
