Glycohemoglobin (GHB), Total
Description: This is an irreversible glucose-protein bond which extends through the life of an erythrocyte. Glycated hemoglobin values are used to assess long-term glucose control in diabetes, especially in insulin-dependent diabetics whose glucose levels are labile, and in whom blood and urine glucose measurements exhibit significant daily variation. GHB measurements reflect the level of control present over the preceding 100-120 days; more recent levels have greater weight. GHB is especially helpful...

The glycohemoglobin blood test measures the amount of sugar (glucose) bound to hemoglobin. The glycohemoglobin test is used primarily to diagnose and monitor diabetes. People who have diabetes or other conditions that increase blood glucose levels have elevated levels of glycohemoglobin. Since glucose stays attached to hemoglobin for the life of the red blood cell (approximately 120 days), the level of glycohemoglobin reflects the average blood glucose level over the past two to three months.

The Glycohemoglobin blood test is used to diagnose and monitor diabetes by measuring the average blood glucose level over the past two to three months. T he glycohemoglobin level for a healthy adult should be less than 7.3%. Adults with diabetes often have normal Glycohemoglobin levels below 9%. Following is a sample of the results of the Glycohemoglobin blood test. The reference interval indicates the normal ranges and the flag indicates a result outside of those ranges.
