This world famous Ghana bolga basket is handwoven and handcolored by women and men in Ghana. The handles are hand stitched leather covered handles.

These baskets are made by members of the Maata N Tudu Association in Northern Ghana. It is an association of rural women from the three northern regions of Ghana who have come together to improve the quality of their lives through skills training, savings, loans and mutual self-help. Each Basket is 15 inches in diameter. Perfect for shopping or home decor.

For our standard shipping prices, we'll ship the baskets to you "squished" or collapsed (see photo below). In just a few minutes, you can restore your basket to its normal shape by wetting and massaging it. Let it sit to dry. If you put it in the sunshine, drying will only take an hour or so.

Bolga baskets are made in Bolgatanga, a small town in the northern region of Ghana. The baskets are purely hand woven, and they are made from straw called "Elephant Grass". The colors of the baskets are taken mostly from plant extracts that don't stain or run. These market baskets are reinforced with leather.

Weavers in the region use the abundant Elephant grass to weave these incredibly hardy, useful baskets. Easily reshape your basket by quickly submerging in water (keep leather dry), reshape by hand and let dry. Although we attempt to ship all baskets fully shaped, some baskets may need a little bit of shaping when they arrive to you. Approx 14-16 inches Across X 5-6 inches Deep (plus handle).

They have been made there for decades, providing a livelihood for many local families. Bolga baskets are made out of a natural grass known locally as Kinkanhe.
