Second niggle: It's common sense that you have to insert the cartridge before powering up the GBA. Same thing here. You must insert the GBA cartridge before powering up the GC + GBP combo and booting the disk. Insert a cartridge when the GB Player is already on and the screen blares out a warning which fills the screen... Once powered up however, carts are hot-swappable through the menu option without having to go through the boot process again.

Set up could not be simpler. The Game Boy Player fits snugly to the bottom of the GCN, adding just one inch in height. Pop the Game Boy Player system disk into the GCN and attach the Game Boy Player to the bottom via the High-Speed Port Connector. Do not worry if you have a GCN Modem or Broadband adapter, they will work too--you can plug them in and still attach the GBP.
