Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) composed the Impromptus of his Op. 142 (D. 935) in December 1827, while living in three rooms at "The Blue Hedgehog" in Viennahis last abode. In February 1828 he offered them to the publisher Schott, suggesting that they could be published separately or all together. Although two Impromptus, the first two of Op. 90 (D. 899), had been published the previous year, this set was not accepted and had to wait until 1838, ten years after Schubert's death, to be issued by Diabelli.
