Near the end of his long and celebrated career, master filmmaker Jean Renoir indulged his lifelong obsession with life-as-theater and directed "The Golden Coach" (1953), "French Cancan" (1955), and "Elena And Her Men" (1956), three delirious films, infatuated with the past, love, and artifice. Awash in jubilant Technicolor, each film interweaves public display and private feelings through the talents of three immortal film icons; Anna Magnani, Jean Gabin, and Ingrid Bergman. In White , the tone changes to sardonic irony, even black humor. White as a color represents equality, but it is not the happy equality of justice, but the equality of settling a score, getting even; it also represents the clean slate of starting afresh. THE FOREIGN FILMS
All of you Matherites out there should truly be stoked by this one; on the heels of Stockton`s release featured last week, this one will be truly up your alley. The Foreign Films is actually Hamilton, Ontario`s Bill Majoros, and he`s a vocal cousin to Lennon and Harrison (Robert, not George). Majoros has been a vet of the music studios for 15 years, as sideman and producer, and it shows on his debut as frontman (he wrote all the tracks as well) as the disc is a sonic as well as melodic delight. This comedy from Poland follows a man who is mistaken for a genius director but is actually a con artist working the perfect scam. Preying on innocent folk who have dreams of acting superstardom, he works with his trusty cinematographer (who also knows nothing about the craft of film) in order to earn a living. KITSCH is a hilarious satire that takes a jab at the pretentiousness that tends to pervade the film business.
