Multiple players may be used on each part to expand the ensemble. This arrangement is hugely influenced by jazz. Ragtime is an originally American musical genre which enjoyed its peak popularity between 1897 and 1918. Ragtime was the first truly American musical genre, predating jazz. It began as dance music in the Red-light district of American cities such as St. Louis and New Orleans years before being published as popular sheet music for piano. It was a modification of the march made popular by John Philip Sousa, with additional Polyrhythms coming from African music. Scott Joplin became famous through t...

The title, The Accidental Rag , derives from the Accidental Ensemble, the unofficial name of the chamber group performing the premiere. Jazzy rhythms and harmonies lift this piece out of the strict ragtime tradition and lend it a jaunty sound more reminiscent of the swing era than Mr. Jendras’ other rags. For piccolo, 3 flutes, alto and bass flute.

20th Century: Tonal. "The variations are not in the classical sense, but are inspired by the theme, exploring various elements thereof. The performers are encouraged to state the opening theme with grace and elegance, and then to carefully observe the 'evolution' of the tempo marking that follow" (the Composer). Theme is from Grieg's "Norwegian Dance" op.35/2 and is followed by nine variations, the Theme restated and then a Coda. Variation VI composed for Alto Flute if one is easily available...

This is another famous Joplin rag which has been arranged here for 2 flutes and piano. The piano part remains in the original key and flutes play the famous melodic lines above the steady bass. The flutes and piano alternate melodic sections. Sometimes the piano plays alone and sometimes the flutes play the melody with the piano adding newly composed, stylistically accurate counter melodies.
