Far Niente Chardonnay is a careful blend of estate vineyards that grow in the cooler southern areas of the Napa Valley. Once winemaker Stephanie Putnam determined when to pick each block, the grapes were hand picked, sorted, pressed and then the juice was settled. Fermentation in french oak barrels usually lasts about three weeks and then the wine is aged on its yeast for another 8-9 months before the final blend is determined.

"Most of the fruit for Far Niente's 2007 Chardonnay comes from Coombsville, a small growing area east of the city of Napa, where the rolling hills create a climate similar to the famed Carneros. This cool site, combined with Far Niente's no-malo approach and sur lie barrel fermentation (65% new, 35% once-used French oak) create a wine of wonderful texture with vibrant, food-friendly acidity. Sweet peach, rose and tropical fruit aromas are offset by allspice notes, while the creamy palate follows...

The 2007 Chardonnay was hand harvested, de-stemmed, then gently pressed. Twenty percent of the juice was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, while eighty percent was fermented and aged in French and American oak barrels. No secondary, or malolactic fermentation was carried out, leading to the crisp, citrus character of this wine. The portion of Chardonnay aged in barrel was left on its lees and stirred weekly. The wine was bottled after approximately seven months of aging in the cellar.

VINEYARDS Beringer’s northernmost Chardonnay vineyards, Gamble Ranch and Yountville Vineyard, are located near the town of Yountville, where daytime temperatures slowly climb as the cooling morning fog recedes south to San Pablo Bay. This significant diurnal shift allows the grapes to maintain their acidity, which is essential to balancing the ripe, rich flavors they develop during warm afternoons. As harvest approached, winemaker Laurie Hook and vineyard manager Drew Johnson identified the blocks...

For the perfect dish to pair with this Chardonnay, use sustainably harvested Oregon Dungeness crab in the following recipe. You'll love the way the wine's citrus and fruit notes pick up the lime juice, fresh ginger, and course, Dungeness crab's luxurious taste (sweet flavor with a hint of brine, along with its delicate, tender yet substantial texture). As a sustainable winery, we suggest that you consider Oregon Dungeness crab when purchasing fresh crab (Dungeness harvesting in all the west coast...

Known for its luxurious art nouveau-style gold parchment label, as much as for the high quality wine inside the bottle, Far Niente wines also carry with them a bit of American history. Founded in 1885 by John Benson, Far Niente prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919, when it was abandoned and left to fall into disrepair. Sixty years later, in 1979, Gil Nickel purchased the winery and adjacent vineyard and began a three-year restoration of the property. During restoration, the original...

We experienced an anxious start to the 2001 vintage when the Napa Valley realized the worst spring frosts it had witnessed in over 20 years. The frost was selective, hitting only scattered parts of the valley and no major damage was sustained in Far Nientes vineyards. The result was a reduction in yield and slight delay to the growth cycle. A heat spike during bloom caused uneven berry size in the clusters. Fortunately, the smaller berries actually developed slightly more intensified flavors...

The 2007 Napa Valley growing season gave us near perfect conditions for Chardonnay. A warmer than normal spring got things off to an early start, and lower than normal winter precipitation kept things pretty dry and canopies well managed. Cool, foggy mornings became the norm throughout July and August leading to a light but well balanced crop with excellent flavors and natural acidities. A blend from two of our top Napa Valley vineyards, including ZD’s own organically farmed deLeuze Family Vineyard...

Pahlmeyer 2007 Chardonnay, Napa Valley
Another knockout from Pahlmeyer, this 2007 Chard was the "Best of Tasting" in the Wall Street Journal. They compared high end Chardonnays and Pahlmeyer topped the list. Rated Delicious , the review said "What California Chardonnay can be, with ripe, rich fruit held in such control it seems to vibrate. Clean, focused and classy, with some mouthfeel and the most luscious roasted-lime finish, with a lingering hint of nutmeg. World-class. Ageable." Of course it hasn't been overlooked by the other critics...

90 Points Robert Parker: "One of the few California Chardonnays that behaves like a grand cru Chablis is Chateau Montelena’s non-malolactic Chardonnay Napa, which rarely sees more than 10-20% new oak. The 2007 Chardonnay offers up aromas of white peaches, apple skins, and crushed rocks presented in a fresh, medium-bodied, dry, zesty format. Drink it over the next few years (some vintages can age over a decade)."

Kongsgaard's 2007 Chardonnay Napa Valley is a blend from blocks of the Hudson and Hyde vineyards in the cool Napa Carneros. The Hudson vines provide the extravagant richness and the peach pit and almond aromatic intensity. The Hyde vineyard contributes to the mineral depth of the wine and the super high tones in the aroma. The unusually long barrel-ageing regime encompasses the slow fermentation and the subsequent very gentle exposure to oxygen, which both prepares the wine for graceful bottle ageing...
