- A felt covered head and has plastic feet - Fluid inside condenses from the evaporative cooling of the water off the bird's beak, making it top heavy and dunking it back into the water - The condensate rejoins the liquid pool in the bird's bulb, and he tips up again - Process continues indefinitely - The fluid and dye inside the bird can permanently stain, and the bird's glass body can easily be broken - Children are fascinated by the bobbing bird, and the educational possibilities are great

I have always loved the drinking bird. Thought my almost 4 year old would like it. He is fascinated by it. Actually, so is everyone that sees it. It works great and is small enough to move around if need be. (ie the little one likes to look at it, but I don't want to keep it at his level all the time - water spilling everywhere from not so gentle hands.)

Happy Drinking Bird
The glass body of the brightly colored bird contains a liquid that rises from the warm bottom to the evaporatively cooled top, and then spills back as the beak dips into the water to keep the head cool.

How does it work? Is it really perpetual motion? What makes this fifty-year-old toy so fascinating? A great classroom show-and-tell item or a great gift! (6 in. tall.) Plastic and glass. (Individually boxed)

When enough fluid has collected in the top reservoir, the center of gravity has changed enough that the bird starts leaning forward. Right about the time he becomes horizontal, the tube in the lower bulb is no longer obstructed by the liquid in the lower bulb and the two pressure chambers equalize allowing the fluid to drain back down to the lower bulb. Now the trick that keeps it going is that when the bird was horizontal, it dipped its beak into the glass of water, wicking more fluid around the...

Simply moisten the bird's head with water, place it next to a full glass of water and watch as the bird periodically dunks its head into the glass for a "drink." It continues for hours. Great centerpiece for class discussion or laboratory exploration. How does it work? Is it really perpetual motion? Does it work better with hot or cold water? Does it work in an enclosed space, such as an inverted aquarium? Each bird comes complete with an explanation for teachers and suggested experiments...

Some things you just can't improve on no matter how hard you try. This Drinking Bird is one of them. Scientists have tried for years to prove why its so mesmerizing, but they can't figure it out. They're loss is your gain!

This little guy (or gal) is gorgeous. Hand made in Germany, detail is exquisite. The bird is about 7" long from top of head to bottom of bulb. Beak seems to be small pieces of granular glass, though I'm not sure. It's definitely not the red flock from Taiwanese Drinking Birds! Comes complete with glass rod shaped stand and drinking glass (correct height to aid "sipping"!). As I understand it, bird will keep drinking as long as beak is wet and water evaporates from it. As the water evaporates, it...

I will always remember the Christmas when my cousins got drinking birds in their stockings and I got a pair of frilly socks. I would have much preferred a drinking bird.
