Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Description In 1920, filmgoers were treated to no fewer than two different film versions of Robert Louis Stevenson's -Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In this one, John Barrymore plays the humanitarian Dr. Henry Jekyll, who becomes obsessed with the notion of separating the good and evil impulses within every man. To this end, he develops a potion which unleashes his own darker side: the demonic Mr. Hyde. This was the adaptation which established the cliché of having both a "good" and "bad" leading lady...

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Jerry Kransky
Mattotti and his longtime collaborator Kramsky return to the comix world with an interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of gothic horror. While the story is set in Victorian England, Mattotti's artwork evokes the masterful expressionism of Berlin of the 1930s and such influences as Max Beckman, George Grosz and Giorgio de Chirico. Dr. Jekyll's obsession with the duality of the human personality-the good and evil that reside within-leads him to concoct the potion that brings out his...

Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde' DVD, John Barrymore (1920), New & Sealed This 1920 production was the work of Famous Players (later Paramount) and the studio's early style of imitating a stage look limits this film visually and in terms of its acting, which is not subtle. However, Barrymore delivers with panache and flamboyance as the dual personality doctor. His makeup and mannerisms as Hyde are really grotesque, providing reason enough to watch the film. The sets are also very well done; you can almost...

MOVIE DVD - 1941's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the second sound version of the Robert Louis Stevenson "doppelganger" tale. This time Spencer Tracy plays the benevolent Dr. Jekyll, whose experiments in releasing the evil impulses within himself transform him into the bestial Mr. Hyde. The problem here is that while Tracy is convincing enough as Hyde, we have trouble accepting him as the kindly Jekyll--exactly the opposite of the 1931 version, in which Fredric March was credible as both Jekyll and Hyde (in fairness to Tracy, it must be noted that he didn't want to play the role and had to be forced into it). MGM decreed that no publicity pictures be released showing Tracy in his Hyde makeup, thereby building up audience anticipation. It's just as well that MGM kept these pictures under wraps: Tracy's Hyde looks less like the Living Personification of Evil than like a man who's been on a three-day bender. The most fascinating aspect of this version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the casting of the two leading ladi

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (DVD)
Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's often adapted 1886 socially conscious horror novella, this version stars the incomparable John Barrymore as Dr. Henry Jekyll, a gentle, saintly Victorian physician. However, when the good Dr. Jekyll meets the diabolical Sir George Carew by chance one evening, Jekyll becomes fascinated by the dark side of the human psyche. Further goading his imagination is the sinfully seductive Miss Gina, who arouses more of Jekyll's nascent sexual and sociopathic longings. Determined...

It combines fantastical "science", the misty, gaslit streets of Old London and the supernatural to create an atmosphere of horror that is both chilling and thought-provoking. Of the many filmed adaptations of this book, only three stand out: The 1932 version, for which Fredric won the Best Actor Academy Award, the 1941 version starring Spencer Tracy, and the 1920 John Barrymore version featured on this DVD. The transfer has been painstakingly colored to match the original tinting of the release...
