"The most open and accessible of the Diamond Creek bunch, the bottling from Volcanic Hill sports suggestions of ripe berries along with the usual cassis and leans a little more to ripeness than either of its mates. It too is tannic, but not to quite the same measure, and its direct and somewhat juicier style makes for easy predictions that it will be the earliest maturing of this impressive trio. Limited production and/or limited geographic distribution."

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley...

Richer than the 1992 Gravelly Meadow, the 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is extremely tannic and backward. It should easily merit a score in the upper eighties when fully mature in 10-12 years. There is impressive, pure cassis fruit, medium body, and gobs of tannin in the finish. Do not touch a bottle for at least 7-8 years as it is one of the most backward 1992s. RP

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within...
