La Place de la Concorde Suisse
La Place de la Concorde Suisse is John McPhee's rich, journalistic study of the Swiss Army's role in Swiss society. The Swiss Army is so quietly efficient at the art of war that the Isrealis carefully patterned their own military on the Swiss model.

Having studied at l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, it is no surprise that the vibrant life within the City of Lights is the subject for Cobelle's Place de la Concorde. The chic European metropolis was commonly seen through out his work, as it was a favorite theme of the artist and one that he studied at various times of day and in a variety of weather conditions. Edgar Degas was born in 1834 into a family of bankers of aristocratic extraction. His mother died in 1847, so the boys father and grandfather were the most influential figures in his life. Despite his desire to paint he began to study law, but broke off his studies in 1853. He then spent time at studios copying Renaissance works. He spent years traveling through Italy and America frequently painting subjects such as jockeys, race horses, and dancers.
