Description A historical drama about the relationship between a Civil War soldier and a band of Sioux Indians, Kevin Costner's directorial debut was also a surprisingly popular hit, considering its length, period setting, and often somber tone. The film opens on a particularly dark note, as melancholy Union lieutenant John W. Dunbar attempts to kill himself on a suicide mission, but instead becomes an unintentional hero. His actions lead to his reassignment to a remote post in remote South Dakota...

A "truly spectacular" (The New York Times) film that combines action, romance and breathtaking adventure, "Dances With Wolves" is a "cinematic masterpiece" (American Movie Classics) that it is nothing short of "a triumph" (Roger Ebert)! Sent to protect a U.S. outpost on the desolate frontier, Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) finds himself alone in the vast wilderness. Befriending the very people he's sent to protect the outpost from, the Sioux Indians, Dunbar slowly comes to revere those he once feared...

Aside from that difference, Costner obviously followed Blake's novel almost to the letter; I felt as if I was seeing the movie all over again. But Blake's writing style is something of a disappointment. After seeing the movie I was expecting a much more detailed story of John Dunbar's transformation into Dances With Wolves - something on the order of James Clavell's "Shogun". If you picked this book up looking for information on how Native Americans lived back in their glory days I suggest you look...

Album review: John Barry 's fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early- to mid-'60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices -- dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls -- but it is hardly representative...

This story is based on a time period set in 1865. Therefore, it is necessary to step back into that period --post-Civil War. Research indicates the Lakota Sioux and other tribes wintered in the Grand Teton Mountain Range, known today as Yellowstone National Forest. This is the starting point for Dances With Wolves, Part II: John Dunbar. This manuscript is 315 pages, based on two clues from a journal written by Carrie DeVoe that mentions Lieutenant John Dunbar. The rest is based on actual court proceedings...
