Clematis Jackmanii
Description: From Dewey's Pocket Series - Colored from Nature. Out of Rochester, New York, this color plate was made and bound with other fruit & flower plates and used by nursery salesman to visually represent the 'product' they were selling. "In the early period the plates were usually produced by stencil and hand coloring,.... Chromolithography gradually replaced the hand-finished plates and became the primary medium by the mid-1880's." - Reese.

Notes : Clematis may be planted and trained to cover walls, trellis, posts, fences, arbors or to cover rocky sites. It will need support. Prefers a rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.6-6.5. Clematis do best in neutral or slightly alkaline soils, but they are somewhat adaptable. If you have very acid soil, try to add some calcium when you plant. If you want to grow really good clematis you should incorporate a little lime in the planting holes. Roots should be planted in a cool moist environment...

Clematis can be grown in full sun or light shade, but its base and roots must be completely shaded. You may need to plant a small shrub or large perennial directly in front of its rootball to keep it cool and shaded. A thick layer of mulch will also help to keep the soil moist. This vine prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Adding lime to the soil will help to provide these conditions. When planting clematis, it is important to plant it 3" deeper than it was in the...

Clematis Jackmanii
Where to plant is important. These incredible vines are some of the most beautiful flowering plants, and we've all seen them blooming lavishly on fences, porches and trellises. They're not really hard to grow, and they get larger and stronger every year. Sometimes they take their time getting going, so be patient. It usually takes about two years for a newly-planted vine to come into its own. The large-flowered types are hardy into the very cold north, so almost everyone can use them. Be sure...

The 4-petaled blooms are held wide open and measure 4 to 6 inches across. They arise by the hundred (thousand?) on climbing plants that eventually reach 12 to 30 feet high and 4 to 5 feet wide. Not a plant for the mailbox, this is a Clematis you want to blanket your fences and outbuildings, spreading its royal glory for 4 months at a stretch every summer!
