2006 Fleshy with soft round tannins; generous aromas, flavors of wild berries and raisins; a hint of herbaceousness.

The 2007 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet red may be Beaucastels finest example of this wine since they first introduced it in 1978. A blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, Cinsault, and a few other authorized varietals, this sumptuous, deep ruby/purple-tinged Coudoulet exhibits notes of smoky blackberries, roasted meats, incense, licorice, and underbrush. Opulent, sexy, and full-bodied, with abundant tannin, structure, freshness, and precision, this glorious wine should be purchased...

Chateau La Canorgue 2007 Cotes du Luberon
This wine is the best of both worlds for me as it is made up of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, so it has that lovely bright red fruit I love about Grenache and the deep berry notes that make me crazy for Syrah! Massive dark fruit with a savory herby flavor and just enough meaty notes to remind you that you are drinking Syrah. The finish is firm but the amount of curvy fruit seems to make the wine perfectly balanced. Serve with all things meat or strongly flavored cheeses. By the way, you can see this...

WA 91pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2007 Terrasses Rouge is a custom cuvee put together for importer Eric Solomon. Made from 60-year-old Grenache and 30-year-old Syrah, one-third is aged in small barrels and the rest in foudre and tank. Iメm sure discounters will offer this cuvee for around $12 a bottle, which makes it a remarkable bargain. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, kirsch, lavender, pepper, and spice. The sweetness of the tannins, abundant glycerin, razor...

Located ten kilometers southeast of Avignon, the Castle of Noel Saint-Laurent dates back to the thirteenth century. This fortified farmhouse served as a shelter for pilgrims making the legendary medieval pilgrimage to the Spanish village of Santiago de Compostella, where Apostle Saint James was buried. The Popes, who were then ruling the Church from Avignon, entrusted the operation of the estate to the Carthusian Monks. The monks grew vines in the surrounding hills and produced wine for the Papal...

"Really solid, with a muscular core of boysenberry and linzer flavors surrounded by notes of bittersweet cocoa, mesquite and licorice. Nice minerality works on the almost loamy finish. Drink now through 2009. 4,000 cases made."

A good value, slightly better as well as more complex than the Terrasses, is the 2004 Pesquie Quintessence, a blend of 80% Syrah from 40-year-old vines and 20% Grenache from 80-year-old vines, all in the cooler northern zone in the Cotes du Ventoux appellation. This wine is aged in French oak for 12 months then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Dense ruby/purple to the rim with a big, sweet nose of graphite, black currant liqueur, licorice, as well as smoke, flowers, and barbecue spice, it is full...

Stephen Tanzer's IWC Deep red-ruby color. Perfumed, subtle aromas of black raspberry, violet, licorice and pepper. Distinctly blacker fruit flavors than the Chteau Rayas '96, with notes of licorice and pepper. Perhaps less fine and not quite so long on the aftertaste, but juicy, firm and penetrating. I'd expect both this cuve and the Rayas Chteauneuf to merit higher scores with four or five years of bottle aging.

The 2007 vintage in the Rhone Valley is heralded as the vintage of a generation. Here is a tremendous bargain from this excellent vintage. This wine got 90 points from the Wine Advocate. Here is their review: "The 2007 Cotes du Rhone (100% Syrah) reveals excellent notes of blackberries and charcoal, medium to full-bodied, opulent flavors, beautiful freshness and length, and no hard edges. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years."

Same winemaker as Chateau Rayas and the estates are treated as siblings. This wine is so elegant, refined and restrained. Still a touch wild but deeper and with a core of more serious fruit than the Vin de Pays de Vaucluse from the same estate. Bigger fruit, tons of black pepper, the tannins are serious but very fine and the finish is hauntingly long.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon from an 8 Hectare vineyard. The average age of the vines is 47 years, planted on a terroir of clay, silt and chalk. Dark berry flavors backed by hints of leather and tobacco and a long finish with firm tannins. Aged in French oak, one third of which is new.
