The Castor Bean Impala, 'Ricinus communis', has fast growing, dramatically tropical, dark bronze foliage. Small scarlet flowers appear on foot-high stalks, followed by prickly husks, which contain brown speckled seeds. The Castor Bean blooms in summer when the plants are about 1 foot tall. The Impala grows best in...

The plant is native to tropical Africa, but it is grown commercially in California and has become naturalized throughout the southern United States. In northern areas, it is often cultivated, in the warmer months, as an ornamental...

Some organic gardening sites claim that castor bean plants help repel moles from your landscape (castor bean oil is often used in commercial mole repellents), however other sites say there is no research to substantiate that claim – but, heck – it can’t hurt to try it and you’ll amaze your neighbors with this fast growing, tropical plant!

Red Castor Bean plants have very small flowers, but very LARGE and attractive red seed pods. In addition, each new leaf begins life as an exotic reddish-purple color and slowly changes to green with red veins as they grow into large, tropical leaves. The bright red stalks that support the leaves, flowers and seed pods just add to the allure of this plant.

I plan to buy several of these plants. My neighbor actually wants them for one specific reason. Many years ago, her father in law used the to kill moles. She has tried everything and her yard is infested with moles that eat the roots from her other plants and have destroyed her yard. It is understood that the moles will feed on the roots and the toxicity will kill them. FYI

Since we live in the Gulf Coast semi-tropical area, this wonderful plant - actually got to around 25 feet tall - overwintered through two winters. Last winter we had a suprise snow storm and although the leaves were frozen, it immediately put back on new growth. The only thing that harmed this "tree" was Hurricane Ike whose path came directly over us and it was too top-heavy and shallow rooted. After staking it up and tying guy wires to it, it came back in full force. This is a gorgeous, heat-resistant...

A unique and uncommon variety, this wonderful specimen has enormous leaves in a rich metallic copper-bronze that seems to shimmer in the sun. A very showy plant; stems, seed pods and stalk are a very deep purple. This variety will grow to 6 feet or more and will add a great dimension to your tropical garden. A stand of New Zealand Purple is truly an amazing sight! Pkt.6

A fast growing plant that adds an exotic and tropical flair to any landscape. Usually grown as an annual, the Castor Bean plant may reach 8 feet in height or more by the end of the summer. These are PERFECT for creating a FAST screen between you and the rest of the world. They look GREAT planted around your pool for some added privacy and to add that extra 'tropical island' feel all summer long.
