Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes; Magnificat [Hybrid SACD]
Album review: This Carus Verlag disc, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Magnificat , featuring soloists, the Basler Madrigalisten , and period band L'Arpa Festante under the direction of Fritz Näf , represents the first recording of Bach 's Magnificat in a "new" version, along with a Christmas cantata, Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Göttes , a work rediscovered among Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach 's personal manuscript collection that emerged in Kiev in 1999. SONATA per il Flauto traverso solo senza Basso, da C.F.E. Bach appeared in 1763 in the fourth quarter publication of Musikalisches Mancherley, a musical quarterly printed in Berlin. In transcribing the work for trombone, Sauer has changed the original key of A minor to C minor and has revised the order of the movements to a more typical fast-slow-fast pattern.

Bach took up the position of cantor and music director in Hamburg, left vacant by the death of his godfather Georg Philipp Telemann. Even though his new duties included teaching as well as providing music for the five city churches of Hamburg, Bach nevertheless still found the time to compose keyboard sonatas and keyboard concertos as well as to present secular concerts. Two of the works on this disc, the Concertos in F major and in E flat major, were composed soon after the move to Hamburg. While...

The organ used dates from the 1750’s when it was built for Princess Anna Amalie of Prussia. Though much rebuilt, it still provides a fine, crisp sound for these ensemble works and is played superbly. The five expert string players of the C. Ph. E. Bach Ensemble perform very well with the talented Mr. Hahn and the resulting sound is both clean and musical.

The Prussian King Frederic II quite often disagreed with his royal harpsichordists rather avantgardistic style. Nevertheless it is quite likely that some of these masterly flute sonatas were composed for Frederic II, who ignored them. They were simply too good for the royal Prussian ignorant. Barthold Kuijken and Ewald Demeyere make it quite clear the C.P.E. Bachs sonatas are true masterpieces.
