Almost always called "America's most vivid wildflower", this very famous plant of great beauty has been seen by few, since it blooms during summer, not spring, like most of its woodland companions. The flowers are orchid-like, up and down the tall 3 to 4-ft. stems. They often put on a dazzling show in shady wet woods, and many a hiker has been startled by coming onto a colony in brilliant bloom in the mid or late-summer woods. Because of its beauty, Cardinal Flower is often picked in the wild,...

The reason we carry 4 colors of alyssum is because it is the perfect plant. All you do is direct seed in good soil and you will be rewarded with a flowering mound of honey scented peach blossums. Butterflys love this low growing, to six inches, plant. If you cut it back by half you will even get a second bloom. For the front of a sunny border, to fill in a container or in a rock garden alyssum is terrific.

Cardinal Flower
This wonderful perennial can stand up to 6 feet tall! The flowers, which get their name because of their resemblance to the red hats worn by Cardinals in the church, range in color from scarlet, to dark red or vermilion. They are born on the large terminal spike of the plant, and they bloom as the spike grows upwards. Cardinal Flowers can be multiplied easily by bending over a stem and putting a rock on it. With time, a new plant will form where the stem contacts the soil. A favorite of hummingbirds...

Years ago, we were very fortunate when our red Cardinal Flower produced a plant that had pale pink flowers. We collected seeds from it, grew them on, and subsequently have been sorting out the best flower colors. This one has flowers that are rose-pink colored over a white background. Cat# 1378

Morning Glory are half hardy annuals. They will often survive the first frost, especially if grown along the house or other buildings. Morning glories have very few problems with insects and disease. If insect or disease problems occur, treat early with organic or chemical insect repellents and fungicide. They will not survive a hard frost or freeze.

Thomas Jefferson planted seeds of the Cardinal Flower in a Monticello oval flower bed in 1807. This native perennial produces brilliant scarlet flowers on four-foot high stalks from mid to late summer. Cardinal flowers thrive in very moist, partially-shaded sites but are also satisfactory in full sun if the soil is not too dry. Plant the tiny seeds on the surface of pots or seed flats, then transplant seedling two feet apart during the growing season. Cardinal Flower was recommended for flower gardens...

Our most asked-for flower in our 2008 trial gardens. A few vines covered the arbor over our garden gate. The flowers are so unique and stunning; its true, double morning glories! They are fully double and uniquely shaped, plus they come in the most lovely shades of ruby-rose. This historic heirloom has long been out of catalogs due to the introduction of modern varieties, but this variety proves that some things cant be improved on!
