CEA is normally produced during the stages of fetal development. The production of CEA generally stops before a child is born, and CEA is not present in most healthy adults. However, elevated levels of CEA may occasionally be detected in benign conditions such as cirrhosis, chronic lung disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and pancreatitis.
