Waltham Butternut Squash
100 days — This pre-1800 heirloom is becoming a very popular variety for decoration because of its unique and colorful fruit. It resembles a butternut but has a cream-colored ‘turban’ that is colorfully striped with green, yellow, orange, and red. The ten inch diameter fruit weigh about five pounds and are durable if not bruised. They are fair as a table squash. About 4 seeds per gram.

Fill peat moss pots or starter containers with potting soil. Bury the seed in the soil about 1-inch to 1.5-inches deep. Keep the soil moist and prepare to plant outside after the first frost. Plant directly outside in warmer areas. If planting outside, transplant the seedlings or plant the seeds in groups of 2 to 3 in a sunny location. You can use mounding, keeping the mounds and rows 4 feet apart. If the variety you're using is compact, plant them closer. Keep the area thoroughly weeded and watered...
