Brave New World Revisited (Perennial Classics)

When the novel Brave New World first appeared in 1932, its shocking analysis of a scientific dictatorship seemed a projection into the remote future. Here, in one of the most important and fascinating books of his career, Aldous Huxley uses his tremendous knowledge of human relations to compare the modern-day world with his prophetic fantasy. He scrutinizes threats to humanity, such as overpopulation, propaganda, and chemical persuasion, and explains why we have found it virtually impossible to avoid them...

Brave New World and Brave New World Revisited, P.S. Series, Aldous Huxley

February 17, 2009: Overall, I liked the book, I liked the theme - because we can all relate to the theme, somewhat. The characters of the book have a great variety, it really enhances the reading, and makes it easier to understand. Now that I think about it, I don't think Huxley could have created 'normal' characters in such a dystopia of a life. Some of the concepts of the book killed me, and I found myself looking up other summaries profusely to understand some of the: quotes, situations...

Brave New World Revisited

That he had been so prophetic in 1931 about the dystopian future gave Huxley no comfort. He was a far more serious man in 1958 - at the age of 64 - and the world was a very different place, transformed by the catastrophe of World War II, the advent of nuclear weapons and the grip of the Cold War. Looking behind the Iron Curtain, where people were not free but dominated by totalitarian power, Huxley could only bow to the grim prophecy of his friend (and, briefly, his student at Eton) George Orwell...

Brave New World, Aldous Huxley

Huxley's "Brave New World" is written much in the same vein as Orwell's 1948 classic, "1984," and concentrates upon loss of individual freedom. Huxley's work is remarkable in its research and detail, and, especially, in its prophetic exploration of things to come. Indeed, genetic engineering is now a reality (though only in its formative stages today in the twenty-first century) and en vitro fertilization is common practice. References to Ivan Pavlov, and the novels' ideas about "conditioning" that...

China's Brave New World: And Other Tales for Global Times, by Wasserstrom Wasserstrom, Jeffrey N./ Tismaneanu, Vladimir
China's Brave New World: And Other Tales for Global Times (Paperback)

If Chairman Mao came back to life today, what would he think of Nanjing's bookstore, the Librairie Avant-Garde, where it is easier to find primers on Michel Foucault's philosophy than copies of the Little Red Book? What does it really mean to order a latte at Starbucks in Beijing? Is it possible that Aldous Huxley wrote a novel even more useful than Orwell's 1984 for making sense of post-Tiananmen China -- or post-9/11 America?
