91 points from Wine Enthusiast: "Few winemakers in California understand acidity better than Randall Grahm, and he provides plenty of it in this brilliantly clean, bone-dry wine. It cleanses the mouth with scoury flavors of lychee, lime, nectarine, minerals and peppery nasturtium, with a foresty, resinous quality suggesting pine cone." (8/1/2009) Ca' del Solo is Bonny Doon's biodynamic vineyard, located in Monterey County, where the soils are surprisingly ideal for this rare Iberian varietal. The...

Bonny Doon Albarino Ca Del Solo 2008 750ml
Galicia, the Iberian playpen of albariño, loureiro and treixadura, could not be more different than Soledad, yet these varieties seem to be enjoying their extended siesta in the Salinas Valley. Where the Galician coast typically sees fifty inches of rainfall per year, Soledad is lucky to receive one-fifth that amount. A little fine-tuning of the viticultural practices however has been very successful. We have found that allowing a tad more shade on these Iberian varieties somehow mimics the Iberian...

Pale straw color with green highlights and slight effervescence. Bright aromas of lemon blossom, white ginger and sage remind one of pilgrim journeys along winding paths leading to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Citrus rind, wild herbs and green almond flavors continue this Spanish interlude as '08 vintage finishes long, crisp and briny. Pairs beautifully with fresh oysters, camarón en cazuela or any fresh bloomy rind goat or sheep's milk cheese. Wine Enthusiast rating: 91.

Divining which varieties might be appropriate for a particular vineyard location occasionally requires utter disregard for conventional wisdom. "Our Bighouse Pink is a Bomba de Fruita that accosts you with its floral nose and with hints of strawberry, and then follows with a palate of candied lychee and a touch of macadamia nut and minerality." ~ Winery Notes

We have found that allowing a tad more shade on these Iberian varieties somehow mimics the Iberian climate and produces grapes with thinner skins – and thus lower phenolics – preserving delicate aromatics and finesse. This wine expresses a beautifully crystalline mineral aspect, great persistence on the palate, and a bracingly crisp, grapefruit, yuzu and tangerine dream.

2006 Bonny Doon Ca' del Solo Sangiovese
Made from 90 percent Sangiovese, 5 percent Nero d'Avola, 3 percent Cinasult and 2 percent Colorino, this is a dark, even brooding sangiovese blend made mostly from grapes grown biodynamically at Gimelli Vineyard in San Benito County. The vineyard is just over the range from the Ca' del Solo vineyard, tucked into a box canyon that shields the vines from the prevailing winds. Morning fog cools the vineyard, giving the grapes time to ripen a bit more slowly. Minerally with cherry tobacco notes and subtle...

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within...
