Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Billie Holiday," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Billie Holiday in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Billie Holiday when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover...

October 04, 2003: Kudos! The best book I have ever read on Billie Holiday, factual, consise well written. Most biographers have a hard time stepping out of themselves and their own illreveleant opions to be good but nichlson is great. A must read. And much better than that trash 'wishing on the moon' I reccomend anyone that is into Lady Day read this and enjoy. Its almost like being there!!!! I was floored, I read this in one day!!!

The standard, written by Café Society regular Lewis Allen and forever tied to Holiday, is an anguished reprisal of the intense racism still persistent in the South. Though Holiday initially expressed doubts about adding such a bald, uncompromising song to her repertoire, she pulled it off thanks largely to her powers of nuance and subtlety. "Strange Fruit" soon became the highlight of her performances. Though John Hammond refused to record it (not for its politics but for its overly pungent imagery...

Billie Holiday (1915-1959), the legendary jazz singer whose vocal stylings were deeply affecting, continues to enthrall. This biography conveys her hard-luck youth, career triumphs, and then decline and early death. At age 14, despite growing up with an absentee musician father, little schooling, a rape at 10, and jail time for prostitution, this extraordinary girl moved to New York City to find work as a dancer or singer. She soon became the toast of Harlem and went on to tour and record with the...
