"Quintessa’s been on a roll the last several vintages, with the 2004 knocking it out of the park, but the ’05 isn’t quite in the same league. Hard to say why, except that production was higher than ever. The tannins leap out first, big and hard in the way of a young Cabernet, and immediate gratification is not what this wine is about. But it has impressive black currant flavors and needs time. Should be best after 2010. Tasted twice. — S.H. (12/15/2008)" -Rated 88, Wine Enthusiast

Pillar Box 2007 Red Wine. Shiraz 65%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, Merlot 10%. A black wine with a spicy nose. On the palate it's dense and intense, with black pepper and dark fruit. Thick hewn but well built. A tough little Aussie red. D&M Tasting Notes

This vintage is dark crimson in color, with a fragrant, rich nose full of blackberries and dark forest fruits. The aroma slowly reveals subtle notes of smoky sandalwood, chocolate, and sweet almonds. The entry on the palate is round, but firm; precise and enveloping. Well-balanced tannins open throughout the evolution, and linger on the finish with cherries, cedar and cacao.

95 points Robert Parker This 17-acre vineyard on the eastern side of Napa is owned by Charles and Shirley Roy. Located in what is known as the Soda Canyon area, the vineyard was planted under the direction of Helen Turley, but today’s winemaker is Philippe Melka. They have two wines in their cuvee, a Bordeaux blend and, of course, their Cabernet Sauvignon. My favorite of the quartet of wines I tasted is the 2005 Proprietary Red, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot (1,500 cases produced...

91 points Robert Parker: "The inky/ruby/purple-hued 2005 Blend 25 (61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Syrah) offers a big, sweet nose of blackberries, chocolate, coffee beans, and plums. Full-bodied with excellent fruit, low acidity, and a broad, savory mouthfeel, it should provide plenty of pleasure during its exuberant youth. This relatively new producer's debut vintage was 2003, but these are the first wines I have tasted from B Cellars. Proprietors Jim Borsack and Duffy Keys have hired Kirk Venge...

Winemakers Blend, a meritage style wine, celebrates the artistic endeavor of wine blending. Wine blending is the critical process of combining different wines with the goal of creating a composite that is superior to the individual components. Our winemaker sorted through dozens of terrific lots to select just the right combination. Similar to the inaugural 2000 bottling, the best attributes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot harmonize into a flavorful wine that boasts...

"Cassis, plum and grilled meat notes jump out from the glass from the Bourdeaux varieties. Hints of mushroom, strawberry, truffle and lifted violet from the sangiovese emerge from the wine as it sits in the glass. Powerful nose with a complexity similar to the sangiovese based wines of Italy. Smoke, fruit and flowers. Smooth and generous on the palate with black fruit and earth intermingling. Finishes with melted tannins and a cleansing touch of sangiovese acidity." -Winery

Once again the provocative words the best ever made appear in my tasting notes. In twenty-eight years, I have never tasted a Lagrange as amazing as this 2005. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by pure notes of creme de cassis, cedar, spice box, and a hint of cherries. Full-bodied, powerful, and opulent, with high tannin as well as extract in addition to great freshness, definition, and length, this long-lived beauty should be at its finest between 2012-2030. RP

The different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot were vinified seperately in open stainless steel fermenters. The combination of punch down and pump overs ensure maximum extraction of grape flavour and tannins. The wine was matured for 16 - 18 months in 300 litre oak barrels. 80% of the barrels were new, and 70% were French oak and 30% were American White oak.

94% cabernet, 3% petit verdot and 3% merlot. Good full medium ruby. Superripe aromas of black fruits, mocha, flint and hot stones, with a faint herbal nuance slightly porty. Then fat, full and soft, in a distinctly creamy style, with flavors of dark fruits, melted dark chocolate, maple syrup and cough medicine. This reminded me of a St. Estephe wine from a very ripe year. Finishes rich, chewy and powerful, with slightly dryedged but supple tannins and notes of mocha and crushed rock.

A new offering, the 2005 Ground Around (40% Grenache, 30% Tempranillo, and 30% Syrah) is from both the Alta Mesa and Laetitia vineyards (in the Santa Barbara Highlands and Edna Valley respectively). A dark ruby hue is accompanied by aromas of sweet cherries, loamy soil, earth, and underbrush. Abundant fruit is presented in a savory, round, generously-endowed, interesting style. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. These are all creative, individualistic wines that reveal considerable soul and character...

At Cardinale they christened this the vintage of “Alice's Rabbit”, in that everything was very late. Their rainy season slowed down enough in March to initiate bud push but was followed by the return of the rains not long after, which delayed bloom and fruit set. Already looking at a later harvest because of this phenomenon they enjoyed several months of mild temperatures and slow, steady flavor accumulation, without many of the heat spikes they have become accustomed to in Napa Valley. Thus as fall...

The ’05 art is the work of talented American artist Wayne Thiebaud. Over the course of his 50-year career, Thiebaud has become one of the leading figures in the field of modern American art. He is best known for his still life paintings of everyday objects – particularly his thickly painted cakes and pies. - Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable. From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s. Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet...

EPISODE 2005 is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. The deep, dark garnet color foretells of the intense aroma that follows, full of ripe blackberry and mulberry. The twenty months in French oak left its mark with clove and spice that intermingles with the fruit in perfect harmony. According to Doug Fletcher, Terlato Family Vineyards winemaker, "The long, cool growing season in 2005 gave us a wine that is intense yet balanced: it has berry flavors backed with tannin...

This red blend consists primarily of Carignane, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah, amongst other red grapes. Big House Red is an excellent wine for an excellent price: structured, elegant, flavorful and pleasantly acidic.
