Retro-minded funk-folk-rocker Ben Harper has always reveled in a split musical personality, but he's never done it with such clarity and confidence as on this sprawling set. For the benefit of folks who prefer to experience Harper's personas one at a time, Both Sides of the Gun is divided into separate acoustic and electric discs. The second disc contains most of Both Sides ' most intriguing elements -- both in terms of the songwriting and the adventurous arrangements, which extend to sitars, vibraphones...

Eager to release more material, Harper returned to work with the Innocent Criminals and issued the double album Both Sides of the Gun in March 2006. The album reached number seven on the Billboard album charts and rose to number one in Australia. While touring in support of the record, Harper and company began playing a new slew of songs during their evening soundchecks, eventually decamping to Paris and recording the material within one week. The resulting products, Lifeline and Live at Twist and...

April 23, 2006: The album is clearly divided into hard songs and soft songs (hence the need for 2 separate discs). Some have a very clear stand, like “Black Rain” which is a very political song, and some of the songs seem to be about life in general, but the whole album is very poignant nonetheless. After listening to the full album, it almost felt like a journey- a mixture of emotions- and Ben Harper was the storyteller. What I love most about the album is that you can sit down...

After seven albums and 12 years in the game, it can stop being said that Ben Harper is hard to categorize, because at this point, the fact that he always incorporates diverse elements -- from folk to hard rock to funk -- into his music and makes something very much his own is a given. He's practically created a genre. So maybe that's why it's so surprising that Both Sides of the Gun, a two-disc album, has little of that very thing that makes him so unique. Instead, he chooses to show off the range...

With the two-disc BOTH SIDES OF THE GUN, singer/songwriter Ben Harper appears hell-bent to play havoc with listeners' expectations. For those who thought blues-rock was a relic of the 1970s, abandoned to rot amid worn-out Foghat riffs, Harper presents a compelling argument to the contrary on the set's first disc. Instead of jacking up traditional blues forms in a clich‚d way, though, Harper applies a blues sensibility to the rock vocabulary, coming up with something that feels new in the process...

Both Sides of the Gun Vinyl Record
With the release of his seventh studio album, Both Sides of the Gun, Ben Harper offers his signature mix of rock, soul and folk music, while also venturing into new territory. "I was hoping I could come back to the root of my earlier records, the sparseness and intimacy," he says, "and also branch out further in a produced sound than ever before." From the blazing Curtis Mayfield/Stevie Wonder-style funk of "Black Rain" to the gentle sway of "Morning Yearning" to the full-on power ballad "Waiting...

Singer/songwriter Ben Harper, who hails from Pomona, CA, debuted in 1994 with WELCOME TO THE CRUEL WORLD. Harper's idiosyncratic mix of blues, folk, rock, funk, and reggae made an instant splash. His distinctive use of the dobro-like Weissenborn guitar became a key element of his sound. A few years later, Harper adopted a more turbo-charged heavy rock sound influenced in equal parts by Led Zeppelin and Seattle grunge, but his strongly lyrical songwriting and his band's famed live prowess continued...
