Clark & Telephone Vineyard, located near corner of Clark Avenue and Telephone Road in Santa Maria Valley, is cooled by wind and fog that snakes in from Pacific Ocean along a channel of Santa Maria River. Established in 1972, Clark & Telephone Vineyard was planted own root to Martini clone. This heirloom clone of Pinot Noir, one of first to grace California coastlands, has become something of a lost treasure. With the 2002 vintage, we took what was already a low-yielding vineyard, which have been farming since 2000, and reduced the crop even more radically to increase the flavor concentration in the berries. When we hand harvested the grapes-from September 10 to October 4-we ended up with just over one ton per acre. Deep garnet color. Aromas of ripe plums, brown spices—ranging from cinnamon to cumin—and rich, freshly turned earth, with hints of sweet caramel and barbecue smoke. On the palate, the flavors extend and expand on the aromas, from the array of spices to cranberry, coffee and even ripe blackberry. The tannins are soft and supple. The wine’s firm acidity is a constant characteristic, from the first sip to the very long, fruit-filled finish, laced with notes of sweet French oak.

Chuck Wagner, son of Caymus founder Charlie Wagner, has always had a passion for pinot, growing it at the family's Rutherford property for years. This curiously named vineyard consists of vines of 30-years-plus, which revel in the cool fog that floats in from the Pacific Ocean and the incipient waters of the Santa Maria River. Grapes from here are characteristically intense and flavorful, thanks for the site and the low yields (less than two tons per acre) favored by Belle Glos. This 2004 is silky and rich with plentiful berry fruit and spice aromas and a touch of pomegranate and cranberry on the palate along with subtle hints of toast.
