Large, tufted, pale lavender blooms appear every spring, and the long staminodes that sometimes protrude out of the flower give it an appearance of an open mouth with a tongue sticking out. Some call it Beard-Tongue for this reason! Pollination is accomplished by various species of bees that squeeze themselves into the long, tubular flower. Quite the amazing sight if you are fortunate enough to observe it! Hummingbirds also enjoy these ornate wildflowers!
