Bachelor Buttons, proper name Centaurea cyanum, is an heirloom flower growing 2-3 feet tall. It's a hardy annual/reseeding flower. Also known as 'Cornflower,' this classic blue flower compliments nearly every other color of the flower arranger's palette. Note the dense heads of large, double flowers of a lovely rich milk chocolate hue--a rare color in cornflowers. On cloudy days, the flowers look almost black. The flowers are freely produced on compact, bushy plants. An easy to grow garden favorite suitable for beds, borders, etc. and excellent for cutting. Flowers in summer. Height: 30 inches.

The reason we carry 4 colors of alyssum is because it is the perfect plant. All you do is direct seed in good soil and you will be rewarded with a flowering mound of honey scented peach blossums. Butterflys love this low growing, to six inches, plant. If you cut it back by half you will even get a second bloom. For the front of a sunny border, to fill in a container or in a rock garden alyssum is terrific.

Centaurea cyanus is the classic cornflower, with blue, pink, red, and white blooms of 1-1 1/2". Upright plants produce abundantly. Prefers cool temperatures. Annual but readily reseeds and may be planted like perennials. Likes full sun (6 hours) to part shade. Moist soil is best. The seeds need complete darkness to germinate, so make sure they are well covered. When seedlings are 1 to 2 inches tall, thin them to 6 to 8 inches apart. The first blooms appear 10 to 12 weeks after planting, and last for about a month. Successive plantings can extend the bloom period.
