This four-burner antique brass lamp was made about 1840 when whale oil was the luxury lamp fuel. Solid hand cast brass, the lid can be raised on the center shaft to fill the font. Cloth wicks were used at each port, and on chains are a wick trimmer, snuffer and poker to adjust the flame. There is solder repair on one arm of the lamp, see photo. Here we have a rare and stunning example of a Late 19th Century Antique Victorian Oil Lamp in the Art Nouveau manner from our own collection. Mounted upon a most unusual and distinctive round brass tapered column rising from a three tiered stepped base, the superbly coloured font, shading from the palest to the very deepest yellow, is crisply moulded with flowing arabesques. This lamp still has the original glass reservoir and kosmos-burner made by Wild & Wessel of Berlin (the maker's logo can be found on the wick knob). The diameter shown is for the reservoir, the base is 5.75" x 5.75". There is no chimney for this lamp but it is in good original condition with an age-appropriate worn patina. France circa 1900

Description: Antique oil lamp marked "THE R&A MFG. CO -- MADE IN THE USA." The base is cast iron and the Indian maiden is gilt spelter. The glass font is perfect and the etched and cut glass globe shows very minor, hard to see or feel chips which are totally unnoticeable when mounted on the shade holder of the lamp. Circa Late 19th -- early 20th century. Approximately 22" tall. Weighs 6 lbs. Excellent working condition.

Bronze casting has always been a specialty of the Kathmandu Valley, and before the days of electricity oil lamps like this were a very common accessory for more affluent households. The dish shaped top would hold a small puddle of oil and a wick. The dish accomodates a wide candle just as easily.
