This is the wonderful, annual cousin of florist’s baby’s breath, which is a perennial and often a pest. With larger, wide-open blooms G. elegans blooms so early, it casts what appears to be a white cloud over the seeded meadow, often with the earliest blue cornflowers and red poppies blooming up through it—a true spring vision of wildflower beauty. One of our most useful meadow gardening species.

by scattering seed outdoors after danger of all frost, cover seed with ¼" soil. Use in a designed bed in the background 3-5" apart. Germination is 14-21 days at 70ºF. Not recommended- as seedlings are difficult to transplant. Use for mass plantings. Tolerates poor sandy soil with low fertility, heat and drought conditions. Poppies like full sun and are commonly used as a wild-flower.

Vaccaria is a little-known annual that is superbly easy to grow. It bears clouds of dainty pink flowers which are followed by pretty spherical seed capsules. Fresh or dried, it is excellent in bouquets. Fantastic with poppies grown up through it. Height around 18 inches.

Peony poppies are very easy to grow, very satisfying flowers that cheer-up and add spark to even the most bland of gardens. They are planted in fall or early spring and produce huge double 4-5 inch deeply frilled flowers on sturdy, tall growing 2-3 foot plants.
