Description This collaboration between soul singer Frankie Lee and multi-instrumentalist bluesman Dan Treanor definitely utilizes some African elements, but the title might be an exaggeration. At heart it's very much a straightforward (and excellent) blues record. Of course, the blues does have its roots in African music, but they're not as widely explored as they might be. "African Wind" comes closest, with kalimba (and Lee doing his best Taj Mahal imitation), and "Cane Flute Soul" brings in fife...

Fred Onovwerosuoke: Three Pieces for Flute and Piano (Tracks 1-3.)Featured on this recording are his Three Pieces for Flute and Piano, which present three transfigured African tableaux’s. Though Just Before Dawn is the third piece in the series, I felt it the most appropriate to open this recording because of its progressive tonal language, which is more representative of African art music as a whole. The piece is a product of the composer’s American journey when he experienced new influences while...

This is my lowest pitched flute, so far. It is in the key of A below Middle C. It is a BIG flute. So is the sound. The flute is made from Paduak, an African wood. It is clear and the hardness is somewhere between Walnut and Eastern Cedar. I'm using this for the large flute because the wood is so consistent. Below is a picture of this flute. Click on the picture to hear the flute.

A varied blend of rhythmic African grooves and jazz from Source, featuring vocalist Abdoulaye Diabate -- a mix of styles that gives the album a pretty unique vibe -- shifting from rootsier percussion and rhythms, to a tighter, fusiony jazz vibe! The vocals are top notch, from the more melodic, and sweeter moments to more emphatic, raw and moving -- with some exceptional guitar and flute in the mix, plus some keys that give it more of a modern fusion groove at times. Titles include "Bara", "Magali...
