The Improved Arts Metal Sculpture Project was started in 1986 by five brothers. Having discovered their artistic talents, they founded the group to depict African natural history through metalwork and to make a better living. Old tin cans and other scraps of metal from businesses in the industrial area of Harare are turned into these delightful sculptures by these artists using snips, pliers, and hammers. They depict animals familiar in Zimbabwe, such as the nyati (buffalo), nzou (elephant), and...

I found these wonderful African miniature bronzes at an estate sale. The collector had very nice ethnic and tribal art pieces, that were not new. I am not sure of the age or the exact tribe associated with the maker of these pieces. I give my age estimate based on the other pieces in the collection. They are probably lost wax and assembled in pieces. They are painted. The tallest is 3". The animal masks are the heads for the human form dancers. You see a snake, crocodile, bull and Lizzard. A really...

Being creative is one of the greatest values of my life. Nowadays it is not only to create a nice looking painting or sculpture, but for my art are those 'things' with emotions in it. Every time you pass it, you have to be astonished: my gush, that aspect I haven't seen until now. You have to sense the emotion of the artist. Being an artist in this way is also a struggle, since I like to change my style a lot. But it is also a big challenge.

Using a limited number of tools, the carvers mine the soapstone in large blocks, then pare off smaller chunks for carving. Using a small knife called a kisu, the carvers utilize as much of the stone as possible, using scraps to create miniature animals and colorful hearts. Once the Kisii stone carver create the raw forms, the items are transported to Nairobi, where a loose collective of artisans color the forms with natural dyes and etch the final details. The painted designs are inspired by the flora and...
