Abreu, 2003, Madrona Ranch, Cabernet Sauvignon

Thanksgiving proper we spent the morning driving north to Houghton Lake through spotty snow showers. We sang Over the River and through the Woods even though we weren’t going to grandmother’s house and truly didn’t know the words. Such are traditions. We arrived under a cloud of sparrows peeling away from a bare oak in the yard. They drifted off like a leaf twisting in the wind. The Lions game was on an appropriately fading television signal, I watched the first half and set the turkey into a brine...

1999 Abreu - Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch
If you adhere to the premise that great wine begins in the vineyard, then you have to admire the influence David Abreu has had on the ultra-premium wine industry. His impact began in the 1980s when he founded Abreu Vineyards after graduating from the Viticulture and Enology program at UC Davis. His reputation was enhanced through the success of his vineyard management company, and he became one... More »

Rutherford, CA; Robert Parker rated 97 points! The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch is still an infant, but wow, what upside potential it possesses! A provocative inky/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous perfume of flowers, wood smoke, licorice, tobacco, blackberries, and cassis. Full-bodied, with perfect harmony, extraordinary concentration, and a 60+ second finish, it should be at its peak between 2011-2030+. Sorry no discounts on this wine!

2004 Abreu Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch
The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch, which is usually about 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc with a touch of Petit Verdot, displays a black/purple color to the rim and an extraordinarily beautiful nose of lead pencil shavings, blue and black fruits, licorice, subtle oak, and some acacia flowers. The wine has fabulous stuffing, a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, tremendous opulence, but plenty of tannin lurking below the surface. Give this wine 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink...

Rutherford, CA; Robert Parker rated 92 points! A candidate for wine of the vintage, the gorgeous 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch (93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) boasts an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous perfume of violets, blackberries, blueberries, and coffee offered in a medium to full-bodied, supple-textured,

Parker Review: "The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch reveals a blueberry/blackberry, creme de cassis character with smoky oak, new saddle leather, licorice, dried herbs, and mineral scents. Expansive, with terrific intensity, purity, and overall symmetry, it has noticeable tannin in the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2030."

2003 Abreu, David Napa Valley Madrona Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch is just an amazing wine in the vintage. Notes of smoked meats intermixed with licorice, camphor, graphite, blackberry, and flowers, with a hint of cedar and spice box, have produced a wine that is more up-front and forward than most Abreu wines have been, and gorgeously rich and full-bodied. Last year I thought the wine needed 2-3 years of cellaring, but based on this tasting, I could drink it now or cellar it for 20+ years. - RP

"Ripe, rich and concentrated, with plenty of flavor. The currant, plum, anise and oak notes are deep and integrated, but also supported by firm, intense tannins. Has a sense of polish and finesse. Drink now. 400 cases made." Wine Spectator

- Washington has become one of the most important wine producing states in the United States, and development continues to grow rapidly. In 1969, when California was exploding as a wine producer, Washington had only two wineries, but by 2000 that number had passed 100. Most of Washington's grape crop goes to uses other than wine. Merlot and Chardonnay have been the most successful in Washington. It's interesting to note that Washington's prime wine regions are located at 46° north, along the...

The first release from the 20-acre Thorevilos Vineyard (co-owned by David Abreu and Ric Forman) is the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Thorevilos, a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. It is a dense, sweet, black currant-flavored effort with hints of scorched earth, cedar, and flowers in the background. Fruit-driven (mostly blue and black fruits), with a Pomerol-like succulence/lushness, it should drink well young, and evolve for 15+ years.

1993 Abreu Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Madrona Ranch
"Beginning in 1993, Abreu's wines climb even higher on the qualitative ladder. In fact, I am not sure there is much further room for improvement. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon, another great wine from an often "maligned" vintage, boasts a fabulous dark purple color, as well as sweet, jammy, toasty black fruits, fruitcake, cedar, and black truffle-like smells. Packed with extract and glycerin, this is an expansive, chewy, pure Cabernet that should be cellared for another 2-3 years after its release...
