A Reminiscence Of A Christmas Shared By A Seven-year-old Boy And A Sixtyish Childlike Woman, With Enormous Love And Friendship Between Them. - By Truman Capote, beth Peck

February 20, 2009: A delightful story, full of vivid detail from which one could easily form mental illustrations. Nevertheless, the illustrations provided seem very much in tune with the story, and add to the book's appeal. The audio version is quite nice also. This is not a children's book, but a touching memoir with an ending of poignant sadness, a boy and an elderly woman, two unexpectedly companionable misfits, she unwilling to grow up, and he being forced to do so.

Made for television, A Christmas Memory is adapted from the wistful short story by Truman Capote, previously filmed in 1967 as a one-hour episode of ABC Stage 67. Capote himself narrated the original version, in which he recalled his lonely childhood and the strong bond between himself and his simple-minded older cousin Sook, a role brilliantly essayed in 1967 by Geraldine Page. The remake stars Patty Duke as Sook, with whom young Buddy (Eric Lloyd) (the Capote character) lives during one memorable...

Certain books set up house inside your heart and never leave. Their words become part of you, like memories. I feel this way about Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory . I have read this jewel of a book over my years growing up in a Southern family, and I have read and re-read it to my daughter every Christmas of her life. It lives inside us now. I cannot think of a better book to bring out each year. Truly, every sentence is a delight. And the illustrations are magical.

I first read A Christmas Memory some twenty years ago, but the memory just lingers... I still feel the cool autumn breeze and smell the fruitcake spices--cinnamon, mace, nutmeg, and cardamom, like when I used to bake fruitcakes with my sister. I am from the Philippines, and there's really no autumn here; neither were fruitcakes that popular at the time, because we had a lot of other native recipes and dishes esp. for Christmas including various rice cakes and delicacies(bibinka, kalamay, and puto...

Two of these childhood memoirs - "A Christmas Memory" and "The Thanksgiving Visitor" - center on the author's early years with a family of distant relatives in rural Alabama. Both pay loving tribute to an eccentric old-maid cousin, Miss Sook Faulk, who became his best friend. In "A Christmas Memory", Miss Sook, Buddy (the narrator), and their dog...

An adaptation of Truman Capote's semi-autobiographical novel, won a Peabody Award and Emmy Awards for Capote and Eleanor Perry's teleplay and Geraldine Page's leading performance. Narrated by the author himself, this heart-warming made-for-television drama takes place in his childhood and recalls the time he helped bake a truckload of fruitcakes for friends and family with his ancient cousin.
