Another top-notch effort by Kevin Carriker and partner, MarkHerold. Since their 2002 inception, the Kobalt releases havebeen one of our go-to wines, that is, while we have some available. As immense, inky and opulent as the 2005 but with a bit more structure. Sourced from Coombsville, Mark Harold was really the winemaker that got heads turning when he sourced some of his other wine projects from this southeastern part of Napa. When we recently tasted the wine again with Kevin, he described his 2...

($85; a blend of three vineyards, with 75% of the wine from Coombsville) Bright ruby. Cassis, blackberry, licorice and violet on the nose, complicated by coffee and chocolate; slightly port-like. Then dense and compellingly sweet, with an enticing sugar/acid balance and firm tannic backbone. A very fruity wine with considerable early appeal; has a family resemblance to the Mark Herold's own Merus bottling. This is just under 15% alcohol.

A more masculine, tannic, structured offering is the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of flowers, black raspberries, and blackberries are followed by a rich, full-bodied, big, concentrated wine that can stand up to the tannic ferocity. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and drink it over the next 20 years. It may merit an even higher score in 4-5 years.

Brilliant deep red in colour with subtle cigar box aromas, dark berries, sweet mints and vanilla. The palate offers luscious blackberry fruit, fully-rounded with velvety tannins and sweet oak from 18 months in American and French barriques. A wine that can be enjoyed now or will reward those who have thepatience to cellar for 2-3 years.

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and 4% Malbec) is the most concentrated wine with the deepest hues of black and purple that we have produced to date. Surging out of the glass, the 2005 Kobalt is fully expressed by supple and seductive ripe fruit aromas of sweet berry, cassis, and vanilla oak. The aromas continue onto the palate with added licorice, mocha and sweet toasty oak. The tannins are supple and ripe rounding out this concentrated, full-bodied wine. As...

The continued addition of fruit from hillside vineyards and the blending of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with the Cabernet Sauvignon is responsible for the well integrated flavors, deep color and full mouth feel of the 2003 vintage. The vibrant blueberry qualities of the Petit Verdot marry well with the soft, alluring flavors of Merlot and contribute to the complexity of the masculine, tannic nature of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2003 Cabernet is very rich in texture with opulent flavors...

This is the epitome of decadence! Rich in black cherry and chocolate, this 82 case production of 500ml Dessert Wine is the inaugural release for one of our favorite wineries, Kobalt. The 2005 warm indian summer in Napa Valley allowed vintner, Kevin Carriker, the ultimate weather conditions to produce an opulent dessert wine. We snagged a few bottles and highly suggest you do the same!

Kobalt Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, WineMastersPage
The 2006 Kobalt Cabernet Sauvignon nose is a deep and enticing blend of sweet berry, coffee, accentuated with wild spices that gush out of the glass. In the mouth, layers of rich, vibrant raspberry, blueberry, and spicy vanilla notes surround assertive yet ripe tannins. Cassis and coffee notes interact with the supple tannins for a beautiful long, lingering finish. We recommend 4 – 6 years of bottle aging. 92% Cabernet, 2% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc Winemaker: Kevin Carriker

Canoe Ridge 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon
Canoe Ridge Vineyards: The 2003 Canoe Ridge Vineyard Gewürztraminer displays all of the rich spicy, honeysuckle aromas we have come to expect from the wines of this vineyard. Delicious melon and citrus flavors match the mouth-coating feel that results from barrel fermentation in older, neutral French oak barrels. On the palate, it has a pleasant crispness with a satiny finish.

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley...

The 100% oak aging offers good structure and subtle tannins followed by full aromas and flavors of ripe cherries and blackberry with a hint of anise. This Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent companion to roast pork or lamb during the main course or for dessert try it with a good Stilton.

quot; This wine is immensely fun to make since we are really striving to make a wine that is appealing now, but also showcases Napa Valley Cabernet. The plump soft tannins and the lush valley floor fruit make this a very accessible, balanced and elegant wine. The nose opens with succulent ripe black cherry, cassis, cedar and a hint of mint. Dark, round fruit flavors fill the mouth and transition into a structured and long finish with sweet vanilla and black cherry flavors complemented by a cocoa dusting...

Supple and generous, this is a well-structured Cabernet blended in the classic Bordeaux style. A ripe mouthful of currant and cherry flavors are framed by fine tannins and a touch of spicy oak. It has a classic bouquet bursting with berries, cassis and spice. A generous portion of Cabernet Franc and Merlot is blended in to add charm and grace, further enhancing the bright berry flavors and lively acidity. Try it with hearty stews, wild mushrooms, and grilled meats. Though ready to enjoy now, this...

93 Points-Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar “Deep ruby. Powerful cassis, blackberry & kirsch aromas are complicated by pungent herbs & suave oak spices. Fleshy & ripe, with liqueur-like dark fruit, bitter chocolate & licorice flavors lifted by a light touch of eucalyptus. Finishes sweet & broad with outstanding persistence. Built to age but open & succulent already. Still, Id resist temptation for at least another five years.”

Cathy Corison doesn’t go for the sappy, grape gravy style of winemaking. Hers is a more civilized Cabernet. With a nearly sweet entry, the flavor of this medium-bodied Cab is of wet earth, minerals and black cherry with good extraction and firm tannins in the finish.

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon
The fruit for this Umpqua Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Estate Vineyard, and another Umpqua Valley vineyard. This wine shows the rich character of a Cabernet produced here. The long, warm summers and gradually cooling falls in Southern Oregon provide flavorful, ripe fruit with the characteristic smoky Cabernet Sauvignon flavor.
