Atop Howell Mountain lies a 14-acre vineyard that i s a special place above the clouds. When the valley experiences the fog that moves in during the summer, this vineyard usually enjoys the warmth of the sun. This added heat is both a blessing and a curse in that it is easy to get ripe fruit, however, we must wait to harvest in order to get mature tannins. The vineyard is comprised of several soil types, ranging from shallow, rocky soils at the highest point, to deeper, more fertile soils in the...

Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon Vogt 2006 750ml

|
This 2006 Vogt Cabernet Sauvignon was made in both open-and closed-top tanks, which produced a wine with great concentration. The dark fruit flavors of berry and cassis are intensified by some natural floral and spice nuances. The palate is rich and coating with an intensity that comes from low-production, hillside fruit. Toasty oak integrates well with the firm yet polished tannins that, although approachable now, will resolve with some time in the bottle.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within...

The 2005 growing season was two weeks behind 2004, with budbreak in late March and bloom in late May. Conditions were ideal during bloom and the vineyard had a good "set," which resulted in a bit more fruit than last year. This vineyard is on a cordon system and we dropped the crop back to one cluster per shoot to maintain optimum quality. The summer months were very moderate and we didn't get the few heat waves that really bump up the sugars. The little bit of heat in late September and early...

Cabernets can be mellow and mild, hearty and rich. It has a deep red color, with the primary taste being black currant. Other overtones can include blackberry and mint. Traditionally aged in oak, the wine also takes on an oaky, vanilla flavor. Higher quality cabs age extremely well (although a bit slowly), developing a sprinkling of five or six tastes within it.

Planted in 1973, Tench Vineyard is situated on the eastern edge of Oakville along the Silverado Trail next to the Screaming Eagle vineyard . The area’s red, rocky soils of clay and volcanic rock have produced many famous Napa Valley Cabernets. Nickel & Nickel produces Cabernet from just four acres of this late-ripening vineyard with northwest exposure. The grapes rapidly develop color and flavor as temperatures rise and harvest approaches.

The 2006 Rock Cairn Cabernet Sauvignon’s complexity has changed throughout its time in the barrel and continues to develop new flavors with age. This wine has a nice core of black cherry fruit, licorice and herb mixed with a sweet spice and cola that provides layers of flavor. The palate has great concentration and depth and the fruit flavors linger due to the fleshy tannins. The overall balance between fruit and earth in this wine will only integrate and evolve with a little time in the bottle.

"Forward and easy, with slightly sweet almond, peach and tangerine notes. Clean finish. Drink now."

The wine has an ultra-ripe fruit expression, similar to other classic Oakville Cabernets. The signature of this vineyard remains constant, with cherry and black cherry fruits layered with sweet herb, spice and cedar from the oak. Rich and coating, the mouthfeel of the 2006 is similar to the 2005 vintage. The middle palate is sweet and plush and the medley of flavors progress into a long, lingering finish.

Planted in 1984, Rock Cairn lies at the western base of the Yountville hill in the Oakville appellation. The vineyard is dry-farmed, which results in very concentrated fruit late in the season. Originally part of the Rancho Caymus land grant to George C. Yount, this vineyard was named after the “cairns” or “piles of rocks” that were formed at various locations throughout the property. Long ago, the land was traversed by Native Americans, who, as they passed over the hill would say a prayer and place...

This vintage is very characteristic of the Sullenger Vineyard. As with most of the wines from 1999, there is a focus on riper fruit flavors of plum and cherry. The vines from the new section of the vineyard add layers of blackberry, plum and cherry to further round out the wine, deepening its flavor and complexity. Notes of coffee and herb, coupled with sweet, toasty oak, add to the finish. There is considerable volume in this wine, but not necessarily more tannins.
