92 points Robert Parker: "I had a chance to do a mini-vertical of the Etude Cabernet Sauvignons, and all of them performed extremely well. Most of them appeared to need additional cellaring, and each of them suggested to me that they have another two decades of life. I rated the 1993, 92+ (it needs 2-4 years of cellaring). As insiders know, these wines are the handcrafted products of one of California's most influential and successful winemakers/consultants, Tony Soter. Soter has a superb list of...

"The 2003 Cab ernet Sauvignon is even more forward than the 2004, with a plump, heady, corpulent mouthfeel and loads of cassis, licorice, and pain grille notes and a hint of graphite. Deep, full-bodied, chewy, and supple-textured, this wine should drink well for 14 or so years."

Parker Review: "With a stunning black/purple color and intense, pure fragrance of black fruits and subtle new oak, this medium to full-bodied, multi-layered wine combines California's lavishly rich, intense fruit with an underlying sense of elegance and style, a la a top-notch Chateau Margaux. The finish builds in the mouth, and the overall sense is one of exceptional richness, balance, and purity. It should drink well young because of its forward personality, and last for 20 years...

Description The hallmark of this wine is the purity of the fruit aromas. Classic black cherry and currants begin the nose and lead into layers of wild berry fruit, cassis and black licorice spice. On the palate the wine is rich and lush with good structure and sweet

Tantalizing and savory notes give the nose wildly inviting aromatics. Layered flavors of currants, blueberries, cedar and cocoa begin in the entry and surround plush, round and ripe chewy tannins that coat the mouth. Hints of signature Rutherford dust co-mingle with creamy vanilla notes throughout the finish.

"EtudeĀs 2005 defines power and authority, Napa style. ItĀs hard to imagine a Cabernet Sauvignon more explosive in blackberry, cherry and chocolate fruit flavor. Yet the structure is superb, with firm but ultrarefined tannins providing an architecture to house all that richness. Beautiful now, and should age gracefully for a decade. Relatively easy to find, with 4,600 cases produced." 96 points - Wine Enthusiast, March 1, 2009

The '04 Etude Cabernet is very Bordeaux-like in its balance and structure; has wonderful intensity and focus, with tight, loamy earth, dried currant, sage and mineral flavors.

Etude Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2005 750ml United States California
A cool, wet spring and unpredictable flowering season led to lower yields in the 2003 vintage. The positive outcome is reflected in the concentration in the resulting wines. Ripening was fairly even during the last of August and the beginning of September. The 2003 vintage wines are soft in extract and show early elegance. While the 2002 vintage wines revolved around dark fruits, the 2003 wines focus more on red fruit and creamy textures that are inviting and easy to enjoy. The Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is handcrafted from several unique vineyards representing the major benchland sub-appellations of Napa ValleyĀRutherford, St. Helena, Oakville and Calistoga. By deliberately sourcing fruit from this range of exemplary sources, the assembled wine attains the important range of expression and nuance that gives this wine its depth of character. The blend for the 2003 bottling consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (97%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). The wine will spend a minimum of 24 months in French oak

Steve Tanzer Review: Good bright ruby-red. Reticent but complex nose offers a primary grapey character along with tar, licorice and pungent sage. Quite bright and spicy in the mouth, with flavors of cassis and garrigue I don't find the depth of the best 2005 examples, but this offers very good mouth coverage and firm acidity. But this was bottled just ten days before I tasted it and is difficult to taste today.

This bottling marks the second vintage of the Etude Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville, which was sourced exclusively from Block 6 of the Vine Hill Ranch in Oakvilleāhome to some of the most sought after Cabernet grapes in the Napa Valley. The Phillips family has carefully managed this alluvial benchland vineyard for two generations The Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon was the third appellation wine to be introduced in our series of very small bottlings dedicated to highlighting these specific component wines...

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa's deep ruby/purple hue is followed by notes of black currants, lead pencil, tobacco leaf, and spice box. Well-made, with medium body as well as good fruit, texture, and depth, it should drink nicely for 12-15+ years.

|
Heady pure fruit aromas of dark red fruit, black plum, black cherry and mocha leap from the glass of this classic Cabernet Sauvignon and lead into layers of warm baking spices and anise. The palate is full of rich fruit supported by supple tannins that are long and fine. An opulent Cabernet Sauvignon with powerful structure and intensity that underscores why this varietal is one of the major pursuits at Etude.
