1991 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve
Beringer's Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has always been a deceptively supple, soft, easy to drink wine when released. Recent vintages, while taking on additional power and concentration, appear to be made in a similar flattering, velvety-textured style. Certainly the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve (which I reviewed in issue #95) is a classic example of this wine. The 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, which is scheduled to be released in 1995, possesses even more concentration...

95 points Robert Parker: "Beringer's 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve possesses excellent concentration, a smashing bouquet of smoky, unctuously-textured black and red fruits, sweet, generous, decadently rich flavors, low acidity, and a voluptuously long, juicy finish. This fabulous Cabernet should drink well for 15 or more years." (10/95) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Brimming with ripe, complex, youthful juicy plum, black cherry, chocolate, currant and spicy fruit flavors. Very dark color...

"There is no doubt that the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is the top wine in the portfolio. Delicious notes of smoky oak, creme de cassis, espresso roast, blackberries, and graphite are followed by a full-bodied, powerful, rich wine with undeniable elegance and finesse as well as sweet tannins. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years. This cuvee usually includes about 5% Cabernet Franc in the blend. I doubt this vintage will turn out to be as impressive as the 2004, 2002, and 2...

The final blend for the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve has turned out fabulously. The wines dense purple color is accompanied by a rich, sumptuous bouquet of creme de cassis, lead pencil shavings, chocolate, toast, and spice box. It possesses fabulous fruit, low acidity, a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, pure finish. This cuvee remains one of the most underrated great Cabernet Sauvignons of Napa. In vintages such as this, it is capable of lasting 20-25 years. Robert Parker 95 points

Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve
"A fruit-forward softer more flamboyant already seductive effort displaying gorgeous notes of chocolaty creme de cassis some spicy high-quality toasty oak a rich plush savory expansive mid-palate and a long heady finish with elevated glycerin and plenty of sweet tannin and fruit. This wine is delicious yet promises to age gorgeously for 15-20 years. [Winemaker] Ed Sbragia compares it to the 1992 which by the way is drinking superbly in 2005 but is one of those rare vintages that has never gone through...

I cannot recall a disappointing vintage of the Private Reserve. A production of 10,000-15,000 cases makes the wine's outstanding quality even more enviable. By the way, statisticians should note that the Private Reserve is always at least 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, and aged for 22-24 months in 100% new French oak. One of the common threads I find in the wines is a smoky, chocolatey, licorice character that works...

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 2004 ]
With Cabernet of this quality, Ed believes in taking a minimalist approach to winemaking. Vinifying the fruit from each vineyard separately, Ed and his long-time winemaking partner Laurie Hook used tailored pump-over techniques for optimal extraction, and then aged the wines in hand-selected, custom-toasted barrels of new French Nevers oak from coopers with whom they have long-established relationships. The winemakers put the wines through 100-percent malolactic fermentation for added complexity...

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 1995
"The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a full-bodied, explosively rich, deep purple-colored wine bursting with ripe fruit. It displays smoky oak, gobs of cassis, a touch of cigar box and cedar, and a layered, multi-dimensional feel. This voluptuous, seductive offering is already drinking well, yet should age effortlessly for 15-20 years." 92-96 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

"The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve may not equal the fabulous concentration and intensity of the 2001, but its not far off the mark. It is a fruit-forward, softer, more flamboyant, already seductive effort displaying gorgeous notes of chocolaty creme de cassis, some spicy, high-quality, toasty oak, a rich, plush, savory, expansive mid-palate, and a long, heady finish with elevated glycerin and plenty of sweet tannin and fruit.
