Shortly into the Morgan dollar`s first year of 1878, the eagle design on the reverse was changed from 8 tail feathers to 7 (to more accurately depict the eagle). Some coins already struck with 8 feathers were re-struck with a 7 tail feather die. But tips of previously struck 8 feathers are still visible. These "7 Over 8" tail feather 1878 silver dollars are a prominent and prized first-year-of-issue Morgan dollar variety!

Partway through the Morgan silver dollar`s first year of 1878, the eagle design on the reverse was reworked from 8 tail feathers to 7 feathers (to more accurately portray an eagle). These are the first 1878 Morgan dollars originally struck with the 7 tail feather reverse, and with the so-called "flat breasted" or 2nd Reverse. Now over 125 years old, this first-year-of-issue Morgan is a historic issue in the series!

First "Seven-Tailfeather" 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar -- This first-year 1878 "seven-tailfeather" Philadelphia Mint issue replaced the original eight-tailfeather Morgan dollar after minting was abruptly ceased due to complaints about the number of feathers on the eagles' tail. But this first seven-tailfeather type was actually short-lived because its "flat-breast" eagle was quickly changed to an 1878 "convex-breast" eagle, which became the standard in the series.
