The first Morgan Silver Dollar was released in 1878 and depicted eight tailfeathers on the reverse eagle design. Only 750,000 were struck because “eagle-eyed” citizens complained that real eagles have an odd, not even, number of tail feathers. Mint officials caved to the pressure and the design was modified to a seven tail-feather configuration. That makes these eight tail-feather 1878-P Morgans a rare breed.

First "Seven-Tailfeather" 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar -- This first-year 1878 "seven-tailfeather" Philadelphia Mint issue replaced the original eight-tailfeather Morgan dollar after minting was abruptly ceased due to complaints about the number of feathers on the eagles' tail. But this first seven-tailfeather type was actually short-lived because its "flat-breast" eagle was quickly changed to an 1878 "convex-breast" eagle, which became the standard in the series. Our nicely detailed Very Fine quality...

The major design changes in the Morgan Dollar reverse designs include 8 TF, 7 TF over 8 TF, B1, Reverse of 1878 and Reverse of 1879. This book covers the modifications to the original 8 tail feather reverses which were made of necessity because the Philadelphia Mint experienced early working die failure and unintentional removal of parts of the eagle's design when the dies were polished.

A change in the Morgan dollar reverse design, reducing the tailfeathers from eight to seven occurred. Some of the dies were modified rather than simply recreated with 7 tailfeathers and those 7/8 tailfeather dies show the remains of the older set below the new. The VAM-41 exhibits the strongest set of tailfethers tips sprouting below the standard 7. On the obverse, there is a die gouge from the cotton leaf to the fold in the cap that can be used as a marker to identify this VAM. Note this gouge is...

Shortly into the Morgan dollar`s first year of 1878, the eagle design on the reverse was changed from 8 tail feathers to 7 (to more accurately depict the eagle). Some coins already struck with 8 feathers were re-struck with a 7 tail feather die. But tips of previously struck 8 feathers are still visible. These "7 Over 8" tail feather 1878 silver dollars are a prominent and prized first-year-of-issue Morgan dollar variety!

Some of the key identification features are 4 tailfeather tips showing, the lines under the olive branch and the two spikes emerging from under the arrow feathers. Note that VAM-36 shares the same reverse die as 1878-P VAM-37 so if your coin matches these features, be sure to check the obverse characteristics.
