1878 Eight Tail-Feather Morgans
The first Morgan Silver Dollar was released in 1878 and depicted eight tailfeathers on the reverse eagle design. Only 750,000 were struck because “eagle-eyed” citizens complained that real eagles have an odd, not even, number of tail feathers. Mint officials caved to the pressure and the design was modified to a seven tail-feather configuration. That makes these eight tail-feather 1878-P Morgans a rare breed.

1878 P Morgan Dollar - VAM 41 - 7 Tail Feather Complete - Top 100 - 1-025
A change in the Morgan dollar reverse design, reducing the tailfeathers from eight to seven occurred. Some of the dies were modified rather than simply recreated with 7 tailfeathers and those 7/8 tailfeather dies show the remains of the older set below the new. The VAM-41 exhibits the strongest set of tailfethers tips sprouting below the standard 7. On the obverse, there is a die gouge from the cotton leaf to the fold in the cap that can be used as a marker to identify this VAM. Note this gouge...

1878 P Morgan Dollar - VAM 33 - Strong - 7/8 Tail Feather - Doubled Legs - 3846
1878P Morgan Dollar - VAM 33 - Strong - 7/8 Tail Feather - Doubled Legs. The main feature of this reverse is that it has tremendously doubled legs. This doubled leg reverse die is shared between VAM-33 and the ultra-rare VAM-44 (VAM-32 and VAM-31 also have different doubled leg reverses). Another attribution feature of VAM-33/44 is looking at the underside of the olive branch to the left of the eagle and above the arrow feathers for the rounded mound characteristic of this die.
