The first Morgan Silver Dollar was released in 1878 and depicted eight tailfeathers on the reverse eagle design. Only 750,000 were struck because “eagle-eyed” citizens complained that real eagles have an odd, not even, number of tail feathers. Mint officials caved to the pressure and the design was modified to a seven tail-feather configuration. That makes these eight tail-feather 1878-P Morgans a rare breed.

Shortly into the Morgan dollar`s first year of 1878, the eagle design on the reverse was changed from 8 tail feathers to 7 (to more accurately depict the eagle). Some coins already struck with 8 feathers were re-struck with a 7 tail feather die. But tips of previously struck 8 feathers are still visible. These "7 Over 8" tail feather 1878 silver dollars are a prominent and prized first-year-of-issue Morgan dollar variety!

The major design changes in the Morgan Dollar reverse designs include 8 TF, 7 TF over 8 TF, B1, Reverse of 1878 and Reverse of 1879. This book covers the modifications to the original 8 tail feather reverses which were made of necessity because the Philadelphia Mint experienced early working die failure and unintentional removal of parts of the eagle's design when the dies were polished.
