Rare Coins from Littleton Coin Company - |Rare Dollars|Morgan Dollars|1878 Philadelphia Mint, 7 Over 8 Feathers|Ch Unc-63
Shortly into the Morgan dollar`s first year of 1878, the eagle design on the reverse was changed from 8 tail feathers to 7 (to more accurately depict the eagle). Some coins already struck with 8 feathers were re-struck with a 7 tail feather die. But tips of previously struck 8 feathers are still visible. These "7 Over 8" tail feather 1878 silver dollars are a prominent and prized first-year-of-issue Morgan dollar variety!

The production record for Morgan silver dollars set at the Philadelphia Mint in 1886 did not last long! It was broken at the main U.S. mint the very next year. Over 20 million Morgan dollars were struck at Philadelphia in 1887! While millions were melted down over the years, plenty have survived to the present time. The 1887 Morgan can easily be found in all grades, and thus it is attractively priced for any coin collector`s budget.

Fresh, flashy surfaces of stunning silver make this coin a very eye-appealing piece. The present coin could certainly be a highlight to a top-of-the-line Morgan dollar collection. Important events of the year in history included Congress`s creation of Yellowstone National Park as a refuge for buffalo and other big game, and Thomas Edison`s invention of the record player.
