I bought this black birch snare to use with my strata black birch Pearl VSX drum set as an alternative snare along with the metal Sensitone snare that came with my kit. There is space visible between the hoop and the rim of the head looking from the top. I was thinking of returning it and getting another one but instead I replaced the Protone head with an Evans ST Dry batter head, tuned it up using a tension watch, and that solved the problem. It sounds great now. I've never used a birch snare before...
